The Basement Door
You have kicked in doors and run into fires. This intensive is about the door that scares you more: the one to your first AA meeting.
Stage 1 · Briefing
Brave at work. Frozen in the parking lot.
On duty
Serving a warrant at 0400. Walking into smoke you can't see through. A traffic stop on a dark, empty road with no backup for ten minutes.
In recovery
Sitting in your car outside a church, engine running, watching people walk in with coffee. Driving home without going in.
This isn't a contradiction. It makes sense once you see how you were trained.
Your training prepared you for physical danger. You learned to read a scene, control it, and act. You have a plan, a partner, a radio and a uniform. Inside an AA meeting, none of that comes with you. You walk in as a person, not a role, and you're asked to talk about the one thing you've worked hardest to hide.
The job also builds an identity around being the helper. You're the one people call. Being the person who needs help can feel like a demotion, or like a threat to your career and your reputation.
So the fear is real. The question this intensive works on is whether the fear is accurate. A good officer doesn't ignore a threat, and doesn't treat every shadow like a gun either. You're going to size up this scene the same way.
Before you start: how scared are you, right now?
